Starting with the Grenache, the 2012 Sine Qua Non Grenache Stein is a blend of 76 percent Grenache, 16 percent Syrah, and 8% Mourvedre aged in 14 percent new French oak (15 percent in concrete), with grapes primarily from the estate’s Eleven Confessions Vineyard in the Sta. Rita Hills, but also from the Cumulus, Third Twin (Syrah), and Bien Nacido vineyards. It’s not light at 15.7 percent alcohol, but its sweet blackcurrants, white pepper, licorice, baking spices, and hints of violet-like scents and flavors give it significant finesse. It’s full-bodied, concentrated, rich, and complex, with sweet tannin barely discernible on the finish, displaying the estate’s signature purity.
